When it comes to picking the right coal to use, there is more to it than just picking the best looking bag. There are a number of important differences, as well as regulations to take into account. This simple guide will take you through which coal is best for you and your home.
The Stafford Coal range is made up of two primary forms of coal:
1. Smokeless
2. Bituminous
Parts of Ireland fall under the smoky coal ban, and are designated as low smoke zones. In these areas it is illegal to burn anything other than smokeless coal. You can view this interactive map of all areas in which the ban on smoky coal has been implemented.
If you fall into one of these areas, then smokeless coal is for you, but it is also worth noting that no matter where you live in Ireland, smokeless coal is a great option for your stove.
Our Smokeless coal complies with Smokeless Fuel Regulations and it can be used within the designated smokeless areas and it can be used in open fires and closed appliances.
Even if you live outside the designated Smokeless Coal area, Smokeless coal is still a good choice for you, your family, neighbours and the environment both inside and outside your home. Smokeless coal has 75% less Micro Emissions (PM 2.5) than Bituminous Coal.

Bituminous coal is a smoky coal and cannot be used in any of the designated smokeless zones within Ireland.
It has a high level of volatile gases which means it will light up easier than smokeless coal. It is suitable for open fires and some stoves. It is important that before using Bituminous coal in a stove that you check the manufacturers guide to advise whether you can burn it. If the guide outlines a coal type you’re unsure of, then please get in touch and we can advise.
Please note that we can only legally deliver bituminous coal products to addresses outside of the designated smokeless zones, and may be required to cancel an order if Bituminous Coal is ordered for delivery to a designated smokeless zone.
